On Monday, July 15th, a document released by the Chinese government unveiled its ambition to enhance the carbon emission efficiency of coal-fired power—the primary electricity source for the world’s second-largest economy—to a level on par with that of natural gas, widely regarded as a clean energy source, within the next three years.
The National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration of China recently published the “Action Plan for Low-Carbon Transformation and Construction of Coal-fired Power (2024-2027)(《煤电低碳化改造建设行动方案(2024—2027年)》)”.
According to the plan, “By 2027, advancements in low-carbon coal-fired power generation technology will be further broadened, resulting in notable decreases in construction and operational expenses. The carbon emissions per kilowatt-hour from associated projects are expected to drop by approximately 50% when compared to the average carbon emission level of comparable coal-fired power units in 2023, bringing them closer to the emission levels of natural gas-fired power generation units. This significant progress will strongly propel the clean and low-carbon transition within the electricity sector.”
